Wabner studied chemistry, biology and medicine in Munich and London. He received his doctorate and habilitation in chemistry at the Technical University of Munich and taught there for many years as an adjunct professor of chemistry. With the working group "Applied Electrochemistry and Chemical Environmental Technology" he set up, he developed processes for cleaning and treating wastewater and measurement methods for quality assurance in beer brewing . 

Wabner researched the therapeutic qualities of fragrances and plant oils for more than 40 years and devoted himself in particular to roses and their oils. Dietrich Wabner is internationally regarded as a leading expert in the therapeutic use of essential oils. He is the founder of the company "WADI-Essential Oils by Prof. Wabner", whose goal is the development of complementary medicine products and the distribution of essential oils . Wabner was president of the Natural Oils Research Association, NORA-International and an honorary member of the International Federation of Aromatherapists.
